Tutorial Tuesday - Making Birthday Cards

Here we are once again, getting ready for Kaleia's birthday at the end of this week. And you know one thing you can't have a birthday without a birthday card from a beloved friend or family member.

There are two ways to go about this - either electronically or physically. I learned the electronic way in a high school computer class. It's been a good, long while since I've done it since I prefer physically making my cards since I'm semi-gifted with drawing.

We used Microsoft 2010 in school. I don't have Microsoft 2010 (or any Microsoft Office, I use the free Libre or Open office). So I won't be able to re-test this one using Microsoft Office. But I can use LibreOffice to retest it. For steps on making a card in Microsoft Office, click here. For LibreOffice, continue reading.

Electronic Card Steps
1) Set up your template.
    • Open a new document
    • Go to Format -> Page -> Page Tab (it should automatically be on this tab) -> Orientation -> Landscape
    • Switch to the Columns tab -> select 2
2) Add graphics (optional)
  • Page Color
    •  Format -> Page -> Area Tab -> Fill -> Color -> choose your color.
  • Borders
    • Format -> Page -> Borders Tab -> choose your options
  • Insert Images
    • The right column is the front of your card
When you print it out, you can write your own personal message on the inside.

For a physical card, simply fold a card in half and draw your own images and write your own text. You can make it as simple or as decorative as you want, adding markers, craft scissors (the kind that leave patterns when you use them to cut) and stickers. Making a physical card is perfect for when you want to have your kids make cards or if you have a printer that doesn't print in color.
