Hair Thursdays - Doll Hair Maintenance

Before I feel like I can get into actual hair styling tutorials, I want to explain what/how/why I use what things on my doll's hair. Some of these items may seem weird, but I have used them on my dolls and everything seems fine to me with using them. So let's talk about the tools and the methods you can use to make your doll's hair stay nice and tame.

I use the following tools on my doll's hair: small hair elastics (note: they like to break on Kaleia's thick hair, so sometimes I'll tie up her hair with yarn or fabric instead), a toothbrush (YES, a toothbrush - I use a child toothbrush because of the smaller, more dense bristles - MLA recommends it), a spritzing water bottle (I use heavily watered down Suave Kid's Detangling Spray), braid spray (for the most messed up hair, thank you Nethilia (check out her blog here if you're 13+) for this tip, the one I use may not be exactly it but when you live in a small town, you only get a handful of choices) and last but not least a doll brush. I have two doll brushes because knowing me, I tend to lose one for about a week only to refind it later.

If you brush your doll's hair, do it gently. It may be tempting to yank the hairs out of her head sometimes but just don't. Spray with the water bottle, brush with the big doll hair brush then the toothbrush. Then style the hair how you want it. It's that simple!

Some people, on the MLA reviews, complain about the hair getting frizzy. Understandable complaint when you have a child who doesn't know doll hair care (heck, when I first got Samantha, I didn't even get a doll hairbrush with her so I have no honest idea of what/how I did her hair). If you just treat your MLA's hair like an AG's it all goes well. I haven't really done much with Nanea's hair yet - I want her hair to stay the way it is, nice with curls at the bottom. But I do brush her hair a good deal (but not too often).
