Hair Thursday - Melody Ellison: 60s Hair

Ah, the 60s. The decade where African Americans (rightfully) began to love themselves and their natural appearance. The decade where head wrapping, afros and cornrows reigned supreme. Oh, and The Supremes were there as well.

While Melody opts for the ever popular flip hairstyle that was popularized by Marlo Thomas' character in "That Girl", there is a lot more you can do with Melody's hair if you so wish.

The 60's catchphrase for any African American was 'Black is Beautiful'. And it is still as true, if not more true, today. So basically anything that was African was in vogue.

In 1962, Cicely Tyson wore cornrows on the television show "East Side/West Side". It popularized the style and propelled it into pop culture.

Diahann Carroll became the first African-American to have her own television show starting in 1968. Her elegant style was copied by many young fans all over the states and I can see why!

The aforementioned The Supremes had a firm grasp on pop culture of the 60s. Despite pleas from their fans to wear their hair natural, their producer insisted they wore these iconic bobs instead.

Melody herself has some cute hairstyles which take parts of the 1960s fashion....

The 60s still hold a special place in a lot of people's hearts at least fashion wise. A lot of people to this day are inspired by the fashions that took place about/over 50 years ago. Your doll can time travel back to the 60s or she can just take some pages out of the 1960s' fashion book...
